Building and Leading an Independent Publishing Company
Overview
As founder and publisher of Dragon Moon Press, I have spent more than two decades leading the creative, operational, and strategic functions of an independent publishing company.
The role combines leadership, product development, production management, marketing, and business operations.
The Challenge
Publishing requires coordinating multiple contributors, balancing creative and business priorities, and delivering products on schedule while maintaining quality standards.
As the organization grew, success depended on establishing repeatable systems that could support multiple simultaneous projects and distributed contributors.
My Approach
I oversee all aspects of the publishing lifecycle, including:
- Product planning and release strategy.
- Creative direction and design oversight.
- Production scheduling and workflow management.
- Vendor and stakeholder coordination.
- Marketing and audience development.
- Team leadership and contributor management.
Leadership & Collaboration
Dragon Moon Press operates through a network of editors, designers, authors, production specialists, and service providers.
My role is to align contributors around shared goals, establish clear expectations, and create systems that allow projects to move efficiently from concept to publication.
Outcomes
The result has been a sustainable publishing operation capable of delivering high-quality books while maintaining strong relationships with authors, contributors, and readers.
